[San Fernando] Halo-Halo in a Coconut Shell in La union

"...it was presented in a buko shell because you have to scrape the smooth young coconut meat to mix it with the other ingredients. As of me, I have scraped it totally and that's the twist."

Halo-halo is a very popular dessert in the Philippines and because it is everywhere, different stores are making their own twists and versions to attract the potential market for the halo-halo food. The competition is tight, so restaurants need to create something that is new and different among others to increase the curiosity of the people.

Halo-halo from Brother's Grill in San Fernando City, La Union

The Traveling Gutom landed in the city of San Fernando in La Union and was able to discover an inviting version of halo-halo in a restaurant called Brother's Grill along Gov. Luna St.

So what is new here? Well, aside from the very usual way of presenting the halo-halo in a tall glass or in a wide bowl, the halo-halo of Brother's Grill La Union is placed in a coconut shell.

The coconut or locally termed as buko is not that ordinary buko because the coconut where the halo-halo is placed is young which means, the coconut meat is soft, gentle and more to be like a jelly.

At the table is a hemisphere of the coconut and at the hallow portion at the core is the delicious halo-halo.

When I was in La Union, I said to myself that I will not leave San Fernando city without any food discovery so I walked all throughout the city center and saw brother's grill.

When they gave me the menu list, the halo-halo in a buko really intrigued me that I really had to order to see it for my self besides, this is not a mission failed because this food offering is cheaper than 100 pesos.

Well, I did not regret ordering it because it was more than I have paid for not to mention the free wi-fi and the relaxing ambiance inside the restaurant.

The food is huge that I wasn't able to consume it all.

To tell you the truth, this is in fact an emerging threat to any halo-halo store in La Union like the Chowking Halo-halo. Brother's Grill halo-halo is cheaper than Chowking's halo-halo fiesta at 89 pesos (about 2 dollars) and to note, you have to add an additonal of 15 pesos if you want ice cream toppings so it will cost you more than a hundred pesos or more then 2 dollars.

In Brother's Grill, the whole package is already way cheaper than Chowking's halo-halo fiesta at only 85 pesos (less than 2 dollars).

One thing more, as you can see at the photos above, the coconut strands are missing. Well, that's the twist because it's your job to find it out. That's the reason why it was presented in a buko shell because you have to scrape the smooth young coconut meat to mix it with the other ingredients. As of me, I have scraped it totally and that's the twist.

    [Naga] Squid Bicol Express, ahhhhh!

"This Squid Bicol Express was just awesome because it was my first time to encounter a Bicol express in seafood."

I really never thought that Bicol Express is as diverse as culture to the extent that I am having a hard time classifying the food if it is a Bicol Express or not. It is also noteworthy that according to a Wikipedia entry, Bicol Express was actually popularized in the districts of Malate, Manila but made in traditional Bicolano style. The name Bicol express was derived from a train moving from Manila to Bicol.

[Naga] There's No Garden at Naga Garden

"...as the lady whom we ordered the food gave the food we ordered, all the questions and mysteries that are lingering inside my mind regarding the name of the food stall on which I am making as controversial has gone like a bubble."

The traveling gutom has invaded Naga City, Camarines Sur in searching for food and restaurants, or anything about food. I landed in a food stall with the name NAGA GARDEN. I lingered, looked at my back, looked around, above and below, I never saw any garden but the name of the food stall is Naga Garden.

[Calauag] Quezon: Eating on a Banana Leaf at Kainan sa Dahon

"Beyond the heaven scent experience of eating here, is the relaxation that penetrates the soul happening in a countryside chill. Everything was very rural, traditional and could it be cultural, since the way the food cooked can be linked to culture."

It is located in an open space along the long and winding National Highway but believe me, you can have a private dining here. Yes, it might be located along the road but what makes it private for people with hungry tummy is that it is isolated.

    [Feature] Chowking Halo-Halo Fiesta

"The secret of the Chowking halo-halo is the exceptional ingredients."

Chowking is a known Philippine fastfood chain that offers an oriental style dish. However, the Filipino taste is still there until their halo-halo version was born which became a hit in the country and available all year round.

The secret of the Chowking halo-halo is the exceptional ingredients. The ingredients were also conditioned and prepared before hand before mixing it on halo-halo.

Halo-halo is in fact considered as a Filipino dessert consisting of the mixture of shaved ice and evaporated milk plus added with various boiled sweet beans, garbanzos, fruits such as avocado and jackfruit, gulaman, tapioca, sago, nata de coco, coconut sport (macapuno), sugar palm (Kaong), leche flan, purple yam (Ube halaya) and ice cream (optional). But in Chowking, most of those ingredients are present.

This halo-halo is best fitted for summer but if you can feel the urge and cravings for it, you can buy anytime at Chowking because it is always available rain or shine, drought or flood, Christmas or Lent, unless supply is totally depleted. Don't worry, it is friendly to pocket.

[Daraga] ▬ Enjoying the Food, Enjoying Mayon Volcano

"Aside from the stunning view of the Mayon Volcano at one side is the view of a heritage and a structure with a historical value at the other side. That's how JZOR restaurant allures its customers."

There's nothing to ask for in this restaurant if you are looking for a space wherein as you can consume the grace at the table is an infinite feeling of solitude. While enjoying the food, take a look at your side, or just in front of you, with the fresh cool breeze from God above, you will forget all your worries while you are viewing the world famous perfect cone of Mayon Volcano. Looking from the tip of that cone, look down from that point going down the slopes and you'll suddenly realize that you're just eating at the slopes of Mt Mayon because there is no obstruction of the view. You can notice clearly how the cone shapes up as a cone.

[Bantay] So I Ate Hawaiian Pizza in Bantay: Not Invented in Hawaii

"The piece of pizza presented at our dining table created a strange sensation in my stomach. There was abdominal sounds and sudden gush of acids that is already preparing to welcome a big meal for free. All I had to do is to sit back and relax. I was stress-free because I was not thinking about the bill."

Hawaiian Pizza usually consists of tomato and cheese. But in some other versions, they tend to include bacon. Thanks to my newly wed friend Rhea who just came from Canada. She treated us at Shakey's JTC Mall Branch, Metro Vigan in the town of Bantay, Ilocos Sur [an outskirt of Vigan City].

[Feature] Square Doughnut: The Doughnut without a Hole

"...what is interesting here is that the filling of one square doughnut consists of two flavors on which you don't have to buy two different kinds just to fulfill your cravings..."

After the success of the Bavarian doughnut of the popular doughnut store chain in the Philippines called Mister Donut, they have made a new version and this one has no hole at the middle. It is purely square but not the usual doughnut because a hole is missing.

Square Doughnut with two flavors, classic and mocha

Of course, this blog aims every hungry tummy to get satisfied with cheap foods not more expensive than 100 pesos and this one is good in your budget while satisfying your tummy.

This square doughnut is a variation of the Bavarian doughnut. The Mister Donut store has just made an innovation making new products with a different presentation.

It still has the flavor of our favorite Bavarian Doughnuts which includes the classic, chocolate, mocha, strawberry, etc. However, what is interesting here is that the filling of one square doughnut has two flavors on which you don't have to buy two different kinds just to fulfill your cravings because this is already two is to one ratio.

[Legazpi] Pili Nuts: The Ultimate Bicol Nuts

"Although as we said, processing is centered in Bicol, ironically, there is no commercial planting of Pili nuts in Bicol."

Pili Nuts grow in the tropics of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines but it is only in the Philippines where Pili nuts are processed and produced commercially. Interesting right? I don't know why Indonesia and Malasysia ignored that opportunity.

Pili Nuts [unprocessed] sold at the Legazpi Grand Terminal in Albay province

In the Philippines, production centers are located in the Bicol region in the provinces of Camariner Sur, Albay and Sorsogon because it is only in this region where Pili Nuts are widely cultivated.

Although the production is centered in Bicol, there are also some processing centers in the Southern Tagalog and Eastern Visayas.

Although as we said, processing is centered in Bicol, ironically, there is no commercial planting of Pili nuts in Bicol. The fruits are just collected from natural stands in the mountains near this region. Amazing right? No such effort. All they have to do is to collect without commercializing the plantation.

Processed sweets made from Pili nuts sold for about 30-50 pesos each in Albay

The hungry traveler landed in Legazpi City and I found this Pili nuts in a container and it is the most favorite pasalubong for those who just came from Bicol.

The Philippines exported about 3.8 t of pili preparation to Australia and the island of Guam in 1977 and until now, exports are still on the go!

The tasty nuts just kept me going then mixed with sweets that just blend deliciously sweet!

[Dagupan City] Eating Street Foods in Standing Position

"Don't worry, a lot of people there are standing eating with you so don't be ashamed, you're not alone. But make sure it is about 4pm to 7pm where the peak hour really peaks in. Just feel free to eat and relax alternatively!"

The hungry traveler landed in the country's bangus capital. But aside from bangus, I discovered some interesting do-it-yourself style of eating along the busy and traffic-jammed streets of Dagupan.

Chicken Nuggets served by a food stall along Burgos Street, Dagupan City

I said do it yourself manner of eating because just after you buy the food, the vendor is no longer accountable where you're going to stay.

But of course, if the food isn't that well, you might complain but for your space to eat, never ask for assistance.

You have to look a space for yourself and don't get surprised if everyone around you is standing while handling a food and eating in standing position.

    Tokneneng, one-day-old chicken and isaw

Along Burgos Street in Dagupan and just near the fences of the Dagupan City plaza, there are food stalls there and everything can be considered a street food.

Some of the most famous Philippine street foods are here. We have the tokneneng, an egg wrapped by a flour with mixed ingredients then dipped in a sauce.

    One-day-old chicken barbecue

There is also the isaw, intestines of chicken griilled to create a chicken intestine barbecue. Speaking of chicken, better try the one-day-old. Yes, that's right. The name of the food is one-day-old because it is in fact a one-day-old chick just escaped from the egg shell.

There you have the one-day-old chicken and there is a technique in eating this. When I bought one, the vendor suddenly stopped me when I was about to eat that and told me to give the food and learned that there is a technique in eating it.

The vendor removed something from that one-day-old chicken and she told me that the removable thing out there tastes bitter. So, that was the technique and I don't know how to do it, lol!

This was really fun. In this part of Dagupan, there are no tables. You have to eat while standing and yeah, it was cool while viewing other people walking into rush and the traffic jam, I think this is another way to relax...

Don't worry, a lot of people there are standing eating with you so don't be ashamed, you're not alone. But make sure it is about 4pm to 7pm where the peak hour really peaks in. Just feel free to eat and relax alternatively!

[Atimonan] Bananacue Party Inside a Bus in Quezon

"In fact, I was moved to buy that time because of the will to help others considering that boy earn a living by selling bananacues for passengers of buses that pass by that road."

The traveling gutom landed on Atimonan, Quezon while on board a bus. The roads are under construction that's why we have to pass by one at a time. The moment we stopped for a while to give way for other vehicles for their turn, a boy suddenly came in the bus handling a basket of bananacue.

Ok, he was offering us a bananacue for 10 pesos per stick. The boy looked so simple, with perspiration on his cheeks, wearing a large t-shirt and handling a basket of bananacue.

I happened to ask him what else he does for a living and he told me that the bananas of their town is what make them live.

The bananacue were still hot, have just been cooked. It was deep fried with the usual caramelized brown sugar.

Bananacue is usually made from Saba bananas which are very abundant in the town and it is a very popular snack in the Philippines. It I am not mistaken, this snack is endemic to the Philippines and in this part of Atimonan, Quezon, it is very present. You don't need to locate for it, because the bananacue vendors will come to you for a reason.

A bananacue for 10 pesos per stick is not that bad at all. In fact, I was moved to buy that time because of the will to help others considering that boy earn a living by selling bananacues for passengers of buses that pass by that road.

Physically, I wasn't hungry but deep in my soul, I am hungry to render a helping hand in my own little way.

As I went through the trip, I finally saw a linkage why this place is filled with people selling bananacue. Could it be a growing industry and there are banana plantations almost everywhere.

A short capture of the long stretch of banana plantation that is seen along the roads of Atimonan, Quezon.

My companions have no plans buying bananacue but when I started to take some, they also conformed, well, this time, I must call it the Bananacue break in Atimonan, Quezon.

Everyone inside the bus is partying with bananacue and I was really glad that the boy earned a good money that day!

These female engineers are partying with bananas inside a bus

The girls' group inside the bus were enjoying the Bananacue and mind you, they are not just your ordinary girls, they are civil engineers who build dikes, dams, bridges and highways.

Before we called it a day, the gutom travelers were able to see the hidden beauty of Atimonan countryside seeing the serene and calm bay and the beautiful palm trees at the slopes of the mountains while having a bananacue party!

Photos from EDMARATION etc: Palagutom's travel blog.

It was a party for a cause, we have helped the boy by buying his bananacue products! Hope he can have a good life with those bananas.

[Candelaria] Jollibee Breakfast in Candelaria, Quezon

"I just can't really explain the feeling why there is always an excitement when it is my first time to eat in a Jollibee branch in a new place that I went through. But when eating in a Jollibee at home, it is very usual."

In the Philippines, I love the business idea that Jollibee must be everywhere. The fastfood giant, is really making a great and very presence of appearance in every single key town and in cities. If we look for somewhere to eat on the event that we have been into a new place, Jollibee is always the trusted brand if ever there is a branch therein.

[Baguio] Benguet Strawberries are not Real Berries

"...for readers' sake, strawberries are not real berries but they are more closely related to rose [an ornamental plant] than berries."

The province of Benguet, being a province located up high the mountains, it can be a host for plants that prefer a temperate weather. The traveling gutom has landed to Baguio City in Benguet  and has found another treat with this lovely strawberries - fruit bearing plants that love the cool atmosphere.

In my way searching and verifying stories, I found out these strawberries in Mine's View Park of Baguio City.

There are a lot of strawberry stores in Baguio I know, because many friends of mine tell me about that but it was my first time to see these strawberries in bundle in person. Whoaah! It was such a very memorable experience to see these strawberries.

The look of these strawberries were very inviting because they look so delicious and juicy being a first timer to encounter those. A lot were displayed at the stalls in Mine's View Park and it was not really easy to ignore those!

Benguet province is really blessed with a cold temperature that it is capable of hosting plants that only grown in countries with four seasons.

However, for readers' sake, strawberries are not real berries but they are more closely related to rose [an ornamental plant] than berries.

It is very unbelievable that strawberries are not considered berries. In contrary, eggplant, which we consider a vegetable, is not actually a vegetable, but it is a certified true-blooded berry.

So if someone asks you, "Which is berry, strawberry or eggplant?" You gotta answer, "eggplant!" With that, you'll be very correct. Supposed to be you're in a game show, you have surely won the grand prize for that grand question.

Now we know that strawberries are not berries, they are actually called fragaria." The fleshy and edible part of the fruit is actually called a "receptacle" and not a fruit. It is a receptacle to reiterate it and the dots at the skin of the fruit is not a seed, it is called "conceptacles."

I repeat, fragaria has no seeds. Anyway, whatever name this fruit is called, it has been painted in my mind, heart and soul that this fruit is a strawberry and the dots at the skin is the seed. And I must say, I don't know fragaria, but I know strawberries.

So, all strawberries in the world including those in Benguet are not berries!

[Bantay] Shakey's JTC Mall: I Love the Sexy Ambiance!

"This is it. This is now the real fight and I admit, I lost the war. My stomach wasn't able to accommodate the weapons of the food."

Thanks to my friend! She came all the way from Canada to the Philippines to get married. We have not been seeing in person for almost 2 years now and gladly she went home and it is her time to treat us. The traveling gutom landed to Shakey's Pizza House in JTC Mall, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. So, what is so sexy here? Well, continue reading.

With the dim setting lighted by glorious light chandelier in different colors, I am loving the inviting ambiance of this Shakey's branch.

It is not too crowded. Somehow, quiet and peaceful. The background plays the jazz music which makes me feel I am so special this time.

Besides, all I need is to relax because the expenses are all courtesy of my friend Rhea. I don't have to pressure my self. I just focused on what I will eat this day.

Oh! The sound system at the background continues to play soulful music that relaxes me more, not to mention my excitement because of the big meal waiting for me.

And yes, the crew is coming bearing the weight of that huge Hawaiian Pizza in family size! Wow! Come on! This is a big fight and guess who will survive...

My friend Rhea is really very generous today that she actually treated us in full force. The Hawaiian pizza is absolutely a mouth-watering food with all the cheese melted at the surface, the bacon and all those stuffs. It just makes me say wow!

Together with the bottomless ice tea, I was also pampered with a high dosage of spaghetti, a food I also crave every now and then.

I just needed to be cautious with the deceiving power of the bottomless ice tea because it could make me full. It can't fool and full me. I know my strategy. Haha.

Wait there's more, and I just can't take this anymore, there is another big bucket of chicken with potatoes and I am now in panic mode. I am afraid I can't taste them all.

"'Twas a yummy tender chicken. I also love the potato add-on, it was like a French fries in a huge grand cut!

And more still came with this garlic bread. It was a li'l bit toasted and of course, it was garlicky which really very amazing. When I tasted this, another food favorite has been added to my list of hundreds  again.

This is it. This is now the real fight and I admit, I lost the war. My stomach wasn't able to accommodate the weapons of the food. Haaaaaay... Sumusuko rin ang tiyan. Dyspepsia go away later please, would you?

So what is so sexy here? Let me tell you the reason. My friend Rhea from Canada just gets sexy everyday.

And she made the ambiance so sexy. Look at her at the photo with her husband - newly wed this time.

There you have it! I just love the sexy ambiance of the restaurant. She just nailed it all the way. Anyway thanks for this big meal. Anyway you should, hahaha... That is two years now [Naiipon habang tumatagal, hehe].

Anyway thanks Rhea, I enjoyed the moment and the time we have spent together as old friends. And now, you're married! God bless your marriage life!

    [San Fernando] KFC LA Union

"There is also another Jollibee nearby but who cares. Besides, we are craving with the KFC chicken although Chicken Joy of Jollibee is also nice too."

Franchising business in the Philippines is really very healthy and vibrant because almost every city and key towns in the country are filled with fastfood chains which are all under in one name. And to note, international fastfood franchises are very plenty in the Philippines compared to other country which only have 10 branches of McDonalds and 5 KFC. The Philippines can not surely handle that being a culture linked with family bonding and food!

In a long hours of drive from Vigan to Manila, stop overs are really highly needed and they should not just be recommended.

For a long journey of 8 to 10 hours, the tummy also needs to recharge like the engine of a diesel-powered car.

The traveling gutom is now really hungry and he needs to find a restaurant. Because of the urge to eat according to necessity, the gutom traveler and his colleagues ended up at KFC fastfood in the city of San Fernando, La Union.

Along Quezon Avenue in the City of San Fernando, La Union is an array of business establishments and a lot of places to eat but the gutom travelers chose to stay at KFC Restaurant because it is the closest.

There is also another Jollibee nearby but who cares. Besides, we are craving with the KFC chicken although Chicken Joy of Jollibee is also nice too.

KFC LA Union is very accessible and there is a huge signboard that can be seen from afar.

As we enter the branch, we can see the great smile of the crew welcoming us with the usual "red" ambiance.

The order was of course the chicken bucket meal which was more than enough for the 6 of us. Sulit!

The gravy is as always, perfect for the taste!

I was also impressed with the dessert. I love the very creamy and cheesy taste and I was so glad that I even eaten the dessert of one of my colleague, haha!

We had our eating sessions at the second floor and surprisingly, we can laugh with all our lungs out and be very loud because we were the only group hanging out there. We all had the time and opportunity!

Inside KFC Restaurant in La Union, I love the ambiance although there are some mid-rise buildings with dangling wires outside that serve as an eye-sore but I don't care about what is outside as long as inside is conducive for eating.

I like the hanging things at the ceiling and of course I really can't forget that dessert!

It's time to go on our way. Thanks you KFC for the great food!

[Feature] Dragon Fruit: A Surprising Truth!

"If you NEVER tasted Dragon Fruit, click Like  and let us know how many we are in the club!"

Dragon fruit is gaining popularity in the Philippines but although it's exposure has reached the mainstream media like the television being featured in many shows, there are still persons who happen to be ignorant about it - I am one of them.

It was a hot day at exactly 12:00 noon and I was looking for something to freshen me up. Thank God my friend Rhea Corrales just came from Canada with all the wealth in her pocket and she treated me with some circle of friends.

I saw this fruit shake stand and at the display table of that stall, I saw a fruit on which I thought it was a plastic "toy fruit" made in China. I had a little frown in my face because I was disappointed with that food stall displaying an artificial fruit, with that very colorful fruit with very pink color plus the weird appearance. It was very weird-looking and why it is there? Since I was thinking it was made in China, it would contaminate other fresh fruits placed therein with lead and those toxic chemicals used by the Chinese manufacturers.

I really had to confront the vendor and ask her about it until she asked me what to order. To begin, I wanted to tell her that I don't like what I saw so I purposefully told her that I want that pink artificial fruit made from China. She laughed and looked at me and I was aback when she took that weird-looking fruit and sliced it then put it in a blender!

Whooooaah! I was really shocked! It was not srtificial, it was really natural but it looked so synthetic. With all the "made in China" mind set I had, I was amazed and has a little degree of embarrassment about that scenario. I just smiled and waited until that fruit on which I learned later that it was dragon fruit is done for serving.

As I hand that Dragon Fruit Shake, I was still in a severe status of doubt if what I will be drinking is natural because the color seemed like it was mixed with a can of food coloring because of its really bright and highly-saturated pink color. But linger, I saw how they made it and I should not have any questions in mind. Maybe I was just overwhelmed with ignorance that I was ineffably amazed on what dragon fruit might offer.

It was a perfect day and it was a day of rediscovering new things. I really had fun time with this dragon fruit on which, I made the story complicated and controversial which in fact, there's no issue to talk about. It was just me who was so obsessive and compulsive about that thing.

"Twas another day again of discovering food and a day of eating! That was a dragon fruit day for us. I had fun and I enjoyed dragon fruit because it was so delicious more than I could just imagine.

If you NEVER tasted Dragon Fruit, click Like or Recommend and let us know how many we are in the club!
